During anaphase, centromeres break apart. The chromatids separate and travel to opposite sides of the cell. Once they separate, the chromatids are called chromosomes. In animal cells, the spindle fibers attached to each centromere pull them away from the middle of the cell. Next, during telophase, a new nuclear membrane forms around each new set of DNA. The chromosomes relax and return to their interphase state. Near the end of telophase, during the process called cytokinesis, the whole cell divides and a new cell membrane forms around each set of DNA.
