This simple focus circle demonstration shows the power of your focus.
Note: We have found that for approximately 20 to 25 percent of people doing this exercise, the washer will not move. This is because some people, when the washer just begins to move, will quickly and subconsciously, balance it with their hands so that it does not appear that they are moving the washer (which they are, of course).
If you focus (visual, thoughts, feelings, etc.) upon a problem, a past problem, a piece of concrete, what you or someone else is doing wrong, or what you are going to be doing tomorrow, the brain will process that information. The ability to see (mentally) a problem and automatically focus upon the solution is a trained (programmed) response. Sometimes it is easier to continue to focus upon the problem. It is not a conscious decision; it comes as the result of your programming. In most circumstances, especially while driving, there is simply not enough time to think about it. It is a reflex—a reaction!
This is why lectures about what to do are usually not very effective. A great teacher has the ability to get students to focus upon how to do it right, rather than what they are doing wrong. Remember, the brain cannot not think about something. If we say to the brain, “don’t think about that wall,” the brain cannot not think about the wall. What you can do is think about (focus on) the ideal line, rather than the wall. You can focus on what you want to do, rather than on what you don’t want to do.
