Chapter 7

After packing up as many supplies as they could reasonably carry, the adults equipped themselves with what weapons they had available. Baron grabbed one of his hatchets and, with Kassandra’s help, threaded the leather loop on his left side so he could easily draw it with his good hand.

Kassandra belted on a twelve-inch Bowie and a seven-inch K-Bar, and also kept one of their other hatchets in her dominant hand, Kassie’s tiny hand clasped in her left. Rose stuck with John’s staff she brought with her as well as the Kukri she had brought from home.

Drake already had his scouts survival kit and had his Mana Blade attached to his hip, where he could reach it quickly. The only one that wasn’t armed was little Kassie, being only seven years old. She had had no knife handling training, aside from butter knives, so her parents decided it would be safer for her to not carry one.

Rose had the reptiles secured in and on her hoodie once again. Balder and Uni were leashed and ready to go. Baron was about to open the front door, but then he paused and turned to look at Kassandra. “I just had a thought. I know we wanted to wait until we learned more about what was going on before assigning Kassie’s Perk, but if we are going out there, I think we should give her every chance we can, just in case something happens. What were the options again?” he asked.

Kassandra thought about it for a moment. “You’re right. Everyone else has used their Perk. Give me just a moment.” With a deep breath and that strange unfocusing of her eyes, Kassandra brought up her interface and found the section she was looking for. “The options are: double Health regeneration, double Stamina pool, or double Stamina regeneration.”

Baron thought about the options for a moment. “If anything happens to us, her best chance at survival will be to run away as fast as she can. While increasing her Stamina regeneration will help her recover faster, I think it would be better for her to run for twice as long at full speed. The school isn’t that far away, so if we double her Stamina pool, she should be able to make it there in a single full sprint. What do you think?”

Kassandra nodded her head. “With her not having the option to choose a Path for another year, and circumstances being what they are, I don’t see a better option.” She had tears in her eyes as she poked her finger at the option, selecting the double Stamina pool for her daughter’s minor Perk.

Kassie shivered for a moment as the Perk took effect. Once it was over, her eyes shone and she practically vibrated in her shoes. It looked like the little girl had taken a hit of pure caffeine and couldn’t hold herself still.

Baron knelt in front of his daughter and looked her in the eyes. “Kassie, I want you to listen to me carefully.
