CHAPTER 25

I keep my eyes closed even though I can tell that I’ve arrived. I’m too afraid to open them.

What if this world is even worse than the last?

Even if it’s not, I’m starting to lose hope that out of the infinite universes out there, I’m going to somehow stumble on my own.

Finally, I realize that if I have actually teleported myself into an even more dangerous new world, it’s probably not a great idea to keep my eyes closed for too long.

So I open them.

And what I see is… normal? The suburban neighborhood was a picture of calmness. The streets are lined with trees that gently sway in the light breeze. Bright, colorful flowers bloom in yards and gardens. Sunlight filters through the branches. There’s an air of tranquility.

Wait a minute, this isn’t just a suburb. This is near where me and Derrick used to live, I’m sure of it. I look around for street signs or clues that would help me orientate myself. Directions have always been a real weak point for me, but a park down the street catches my eye. I remember it being close to our house, but what street was it on?

I see a post with a sign at the corner and hurry over to read it. I recognize some of the names on the sign: Main Street, Church Street, Maple Avenue…I’ve heard those before!

I’m definitely close. I should be able to find my way home from here.

I head down Maple Avenue, recognizing a few of the buildings as I pass them by. I turn onto Church Street, and as I do so, my heart starts to race with anticipation; this is it! Sure enough, a couple blocks later and there it is – our old house!

I run up to it, forgetting for a moment that even if it really is my old house, and this really is my timeline, we still would have moved out of that house quite a while ago now. Even though going up to it and knocking on the door wouldn’t accomplish anything, I still figure I might be able to tell just by the looks of it if I’m in the right place or not.

What I find is disappointing. The house used to be green, but it’s painted white now. While that could have been the result of the new renters deciding to change things up a bit, I’m not very optimistic. I’m going to have to figure out a more reliable way of knowing whether I’m in the right universe or not.

I begin to walk away from the house when I hear the creak of the front door opening. I turn back and see my brother Derrick standing in the entryway.

“Connor?”

“Derrick?”

“What the hell are you doing here?” he asks.

“Uh, this is our house. Right?”

“Get inside, now,” he says, scanning the street up and down as he holds the door open for me.

I enter the house and it immediately feels off. Gone are the kind of mismatched furniture that two brothers living on their own tend to accumulate.
