Chapter 11
Party of Five
This has to be a joke. Another Seraphim hovers overhead as Cassiel finishes off the dying angel and I stagger back, still overwhelmed by the searing pain in the back of my neck. It feels like my chip is made of molten metal thatâs burning its way deeper into my flesh. I raise my weapon and fire at the other angel even though the trajectory screen my newly directed focus calls up makes aiming even harder.
Black blood sprays from the angelâs left wing. Not the critical strike I was hoping for, but it shrieks and seems to be having trouble staying afloat. Before I can fire again, it opens its toothy mouth and lets out a Sound of Judgment to put the last to shame.
The blast sends me flying back, and all I can do is hope that itâs enough to shut Minerva all the way down. As I land, my vision goes black. Supposedly, the TAIS is too hardy for me to be able to get knocked unconscious wearing it, but my head is so screwed up from whatever happened to Minerva that it probably wouldnât take much. At least when I open my eyes, the glitching displays are gone.
And the Seraphim is right in front of me. I draw my mace from the holster on my back and barely manage to get to my feet as the angel stands. I take a swing even though the mere sight of the thing this close has me ready to lose my lunch. Itâs a miss, of course. My Affinity score is low enough when Minerva is onboard, and piloting this thing manually is even worse.
The angel snarls and I realize itâs even more deformed than the other one. Just as I start to wonder how Cassiel is faring, I hear her scream, âDonât look in its eyes!â
Not a moment too soon, either. The smaller set shielding the Seraphimâs face unfurl and I force myself to shield my eyes, even if it is counterintuitive. A golden blast of light flies overhead narrowly missing me, but it certainly doesnât miss the Seraphim. The angel flies back and Cassiel rushes after it.
I follow her, because I guess I have a death wish. It occurs to me that the ship is still sitting where we left it even though thereâs no sign of the others. Deloresâ AI must have gotten taken out with the first Sound.
The Seraphim is back on its feet and it grabs Cassiel by the throat, slamming her into the ground. Its hands are massive and its fingers taper down to bloody points like knives. It closes its fingers together to form a deadly blade and prepares to pierce Cassielâs chest. If I donât strike now, sheâs gone and so is our best chance off this Godforsaken mockery of the Grand Canyon.
I put everything Iâve got into my next swing and the mace collides right with the Seraphimâs heart. Black blood sprays my visor, making it even more difficult to see, and the angel lets out one last Sound before it staggers back.
