I half expected an ambush from the other dragon shifters, but nobody accosted us as we flew around the edge of the city. The volcano appeared larger than every up close, the clouds peeling back to reveal a huge expanse of rocky cliffs that looked hard for even a dragon shifter’s sturdy claws to grip.

I found a bare ledge and landed, staggering a little. I shifted to human form to give Zeph space to land alongside me, then turned on my spirit sight to look for my sister.

Grey fogged my vision, but no ghosts. In the spirit realm, souls appeared as glowing lights, and Zeph’s was easy to pick up on—but not Ember.

Where was she?

Zeph turned to face the stone cliff. “Do you see anything at all?”

“No. I’ll have a closer look.”

I turned on my spirit sight, floated towards the mountain and crashed into a brick wall. Not a physical one, but an invisible force that sent me reeling back into my body.

Like… a spirit barrier.

Where nothing dies.

I turned on my spirit sight again, extending my consciousness outward. A solid barrier met me, somewhere behind the cliff face, and pushed me back into my body again.

I gripped the cliff with my fingers. “I think there’s something inside the volcano which keeps the dead imprisoned.”

“How? With candles?” Zeph’s tone was sceptical. “They don’t even have necromancers in this realm, do they?”

I shook my head. “I can’t see the barrier. I just know it’s there. And I think Ember is on the other side.”

Zeph swore. “Can you get her out?”

“I sure hope so.” I scanned the cliff face. “We’re gonna have to find a way in.”

The cliff gave a tremble, and several pebbles fell down. Then a head appeared over the edge, covered in ridged scales and twin horns on either side of a pair of milky white eyes.

“What is that?” said Zeph.

“I don’t know, but it sure as hell isn’t a dragon shifter.”

The creature resembled a wingless dragon with long legs and pinkish scales. The beast let out a cry, and lumbered down the cliff face, its tail swinging.

I shifted into dragon form, launching myself into the air. Zeph did likewise, catching the worm-like creature by the tail and throwing it against the cliff. The worm’s head moved, and a jet of a foul-smelling substance shot out of its mouth. I ducked, and the substance hit the cliff side, leaving a sizzling puddle of liquid behind.

Lovely. It can spew venom as well as thwacking us to death with its tail.

Fire rumbled in my chest. The beast dodged the flames, its head disappearing under the cliff. My flames evaporated, revealing a tunnel entrance. There didn’t seem to be any other path inside, but my instincts rebelled against crawling into a dark tunnel after a monster.

“There is no other way, Cori,” whispered Ignessa. “Can you survive the lindworm?

That’s what it’s called, huh?

I landed on the cliff above the spot where the worm had vanished and turned human again. “I really appreciate how you keep saving everything till the last minute, Ignessa.
