Chapter Forty-Five

“Are you ready to begin, darling?”

Hel had finished going over her list of possible improvements for the dungeon and was eager for Ryan to begin making the recommended changes. Of course, not all of her recommendations were going to be applied, as he had already – adamantly – taken a stance against making his first and second floors more difficult.

“Just the third floor,” he reiterated one more time, which drew an exasperated sigh from Hel.

“That will be fine, for now.” Hel obviously had no intention of dropping the matter, but Ryan just didn’t see the reason in making his top floors more difficult. The last thing he needed was to kill off too many low-ranked and noble adventurers and bring down the might of the Guild. While Hel said he would be able to not only take care of himself that way, but also reach Platinum even quicker, the risk, in Ryan’s mind, was not worth the reward

“All right. First: traps.” This one had been a long time coming. Hel given him a hard time about not having trapdoors, locks, or more general types of traps and triggers. To add injury to insult, many adventuring groups had made a similar comment. Of course, the adventurers were grateful there weren’t as many traps, while Hel was disappointed.

“Yes. Traps are an extremely important aspect to a dungeon. They are a free means for you to defeat adventurers and gain experience, as they do not cost you any mob points to use. In fact, even a low-ranking dungeon, with the right traps, can make themselves into a massive…” Hel paused, searching for the words.

“Death trap?” suggested Ryan, seeing her pause as a perfect opportunity. Ha.

The chaos fairy looked at him and simply sighed.

Ryan contained his mirth and took on a more serious tone. “Well, we don’t want to become so deadly adventurers won’t keep diving.” Ryan felt it was important to say this out loud. It served not only to try and cement the fact in Hel’s mind, but also as a way to keep Erin built up.

The celestial fairy had regained a little bit of her spirit, and Ryan felt vocally supporting her at times against Hel’s plans was also going to help. After all, keeping things balanced between the two was going to be extremely important moving forward.

“Don’t worry. None of these traps will actually kill adventurers. They will just pose a risk that can chip away at their defenses, mana, and mental fortitude.” Hel offered a wry grin. “What fun would it be to just instantly kill them with traps?”

“But,” Ryan started, before stopping. She had literally just said the traps were a great way to defeat adventurers, and yet the traps she was recommending – the improvements she was offering up – weren’t designed to kill. Just when I think I have her figured out. Sheesh.

“Just trust me on this, darling.” She patted his core gently and winked at Erin. The celestial fairy promptly huffed and looked away. “I know what I’m doing.
