Chapter 15

EBAN Shui Long

“All fighters recovered, Admiral.”

“Seal the pressure hull, begin dive.”

“Yes, Admiral. Pressure hull sealing, dive countdown begun.”

Jiang watched over the operation in silence, knowing that there wasn’t much for him to do unless some things went rather… poorly.

His crew knew their jobs, however, so there should be no need for that, leaving aside the potential for enemy interference.

“Pressure hull is sealed, Admiral. Dive planes responding, beginning dive.”

“Ahead one quarter power, negative two degrees down,” The Commander called out.

“Yes, Commander! Ahead, one quarter. Down two degrees.”

The Shui Long powered forward into the waves, its nose plunging deep as the bow planes pushed them down. Sinking below the surface was merely the work of a few minutes and then the steady drone of the waves was gone and there was nothing but the almost inaudible whoosh of the water against the steel hull.

Even that was only audible due to the damage done to the outer hull, Jiang knew. While the Shui Long was fully capable of diving with the outer pressure hull being compromised, it did mean that they were operating without that extra bit of room for error, but more importantly the damage meant that a significant portion of their sound insulation had been compromised.

They could now hear the ocean beyond the hull, and the ocean could hear them.

Risks of the mission, I suppose. The Americans have long ruled the seas, so of course their people and equipment, even obsolete as both are, would be formidable.

Jiang rose to his feet as the Shui Long descended past fifty meters, he went to the operations control.

“Report on the status of the fighters,” He ordered.

“Minor damage to several, laser burns primarily. We’ll have to repair the damaged skins or their stealth capacity will be compromised.”

“We have time, conduct the repairs. We’ll conduct flight operations again at sunset.”

“Yes, Admiral.”

Ford Island

Eric looked over the two rows of fighters, practically polished and gleaming as they’d run out of more practical work that was needed and had started doing whatever they could to keep their minds off of the situation.

Thus far there had been no follow-up attacks from the Bloc forces, but there was no way that they’d come all this way just to sink a few ships and damage the harbor. There was more coming, of that Eric had no doubts.

What he didn’t have any idea about was just what their goal was.

Attacking the US directly didn’t fit with Bloc Doctrine as best he’d been able to determine, which made the situation both perplexing and very dangerous.

“hey boss!”

Eric half turned, nodding to the speaker, “What is it, Max?”

“Good news, managed to horse trade for some more fuel and munitions,” Max announced.

Eric chuckled, “You really think they’re going to let us up?”

Max shrugged, “Honestly? I think that if things get hot enough, we’ll see a chance to beg forgiveness rather than ask permission.”

Eric shot him a glare, “I am not leading you guys into a combat zone over Pearl without full IFF clearance from the local
