Onika had the uncanny ability to push him until he’d convinced himself that exposing his guts to her for her amusement was his idea, with the exception of talking about his home life. He slammed the door shut on those thoughts whenever they crept out. They had no place in the life he’d built, nor the one he dreamed of building with Onika.

If he thought it would do any good, he’d seduce Onika into forgetting about his past. He hadn’t been inside her since Lei had exposed his scheming. Not that he needed an excuse. Neither was he going to push her into honeymoon sex when their marriage clearly distressed her.

His silence dragged. Long enough that he caught Onika slumping her shoulders in disappointment in the corner of his vision. She was about to leave. If she did, not having had a proper honeymoon would be the least of his problems. Her walking away now would begin the death knell to all his hopes for the future of their relationship.

“I’ve been on my own since the age of eleven.” The words, pulled from a section deep inside himself that he’d locked away and starved of light and life, came out in a rasp.

“That’s awful. Didn’t you have family to reach out to? Aunts, uncles, cousins?”

He twisted his head, providing her with his profile. “Not everyone knows their extended family.”

“But you’re Italian. If there’s one stereotype that exists for a reason, it’s that Italians have huge families that stay close. I mean, I know except for the whole Jamaican thing, I just described my family, but shouldn’t there have been someone in the Guidici family you could have reached out to for help?”

“Guidici’s are not forgiving people. Once my mom did the unforgivable, disobey the patriarch by running off with my father, she was cut off from the family.”

“What, no one defied him? That’s crazy. And what about your father and his family?”

“I never met my dad. He ran off when he found out my mom was pregnant.”

“Surely, her family would take in a single mom and forgive her for running.”

“You’re too soft-hearted,” he said. She folded her arms as if bracing against an attack from him. “It’s an admirable trait in most cases, but my mother doesn’t deserve you wasting good sympathy on the likes of her. I don’t make excuses for that woman, neither should you. I’d rather not talk about her at all, but you said you needed this.”

“Right. I’ll listen. No more pesky questions and I’ll keep the concern to a minimum.”

Rubbing his face, exhaustion sweeping over him, he said, “Don’t minimize who you are for me. Be you, but hold off until I’m done to ask your questions. Okay?”

“Sure.” Onika sidled up behind him, her heat providing a comfort he hadn’t known he needed. Her hands rested on his shoulders, first soothing down his arms in firm strokes. Somewhere in the span of seconds her caresses changed, her hands kneaded his muscles. Up until then, he hadn’t realized how tense he’d become.
