Christine Utterback, in an article entitled âIndigo: Mystic Bluesâ [The Herb Quarterly, Winter 1991], writes that women indigo dyers on the Eastern Indonesian island of Sumba transmit the craft secrets of the âblue artsâ only along female bloodlines. It is thought that the spirits and deities assist indigo dyers and herbal healers to perfect their skills. This knowledge, mixed with practices of witchcraft and divination, are passed along, woman to woman, to the next generation.
