â1863 WAS THE YEAR OF JUBILEE FOR
TWO AND A HALF MILLIONS OF THE HUMAN FAMILYâ
A Quaker abolitionist woman from Randolph County rejoiced that slavery in the South was abolished under the Proclamation. The epithet âcopperheadâ was used by Republicans to describe Democrats, referring to the snake that struck without warning.
State of Ind, Randolph County
July the 5th, 1863
Dear brother I again take my pen in hand to write a few lines in answer to thy letter which I received last 2nd day which gave me satisfaction to hear from thee and to hear that thy health was improveing we are all well with the exception of my self. I donât feel well but can be up I am about to day as I was last sabath when I wrote thee aletter but was so glad to receive aletter from thee I thought I would write another one I want thee to write oftener.
we are glad to hear that thee is at work in the dineing room where thee can have plenty to eat thee said it was raining there if it was to rain some here it would do good for it is very dry and hot and some sickness the small pox is in the settlement but we havt got it yet and hope we wont. Thee said thee thought it was a good thing for this state that the relbbes had come into it I donât know but what it is but I would some rather they would keep out but I donât pitty the copper heads any we have had visitors to day and they are gone home, So I will finish my letter. I should be glad to think that the year 1863 was the year of jubilee for two and a half millions of the human family8 I am glad to think the time has come when the slave driver has to drop his whip and run for his life and the negroes took to fight for their just rights I would rather tho that slavery could have been abolished on peaceable terms but as it is it never will be. I do hope that the last darkie will be sot free before the war ends as I always was an abolishionist, but I reckon I have wrote enought about that I will quit and close my letter now Nathan I want thee to write oftener than thee has been in the practice of doing and if thy health is so poor I think the had better try to get to come home but I must quit and and [sic] remain thy affectionate sister untill death so farewell but donât forget to write
