MONTREAL

Sports and politics shared the stage yet again at the Montreal Olympics, which was beset by boycotts and other controversies.

The Big Owe

Trouble started almost as soon as Montreal began to prepare for the Games. Delays, labour strikes and sabotages affected the construction of the Olympic Stadium, and costs of construction shot up to over three times the estimate. Panicking over the lack of preparedness, the chief minister of Quebec took over operations. Even then, debris and rubble were being removed during the opening ceremony, while the stadium tower and retractable roof wouldn’t go up until years later. It would take Montreal about 30 years to clear the debt it racked up for the Olympics, while the Stadium and the Games themselves would come to be known as the ‘Big Owe’.

INDIA’S HOCKEY BLOW

For the first time since it began to play in hockey, the Indian team was absent from the winners’ podium. The stars of the game in 1976 were New Zealand, Australia and Pakistan, in first, second and third place.
