Estrogen therapy
Natural estrogens may improve libido and sexual response and this is especially true in the following cases -
* Pre-menopausal and post-menopausal women
* After hysterectomy or after surgical sterilization with tubal clips; in these cases the ovaries may not work as well after surgery.
Estrogens improve the condition of the vagina and vulva and have the following effects -
* Strengthen and thicken the tissues making them more robust - thus you can tolerate longer sex or stronger sex
* Reduce dryness of the vagina and vulva
* Increase vaginal secretions
* Increase vaginal flexibility and stretchiness
* Improve bladder function and reduce bladder infections
Estrogen can increase the desire for sex and also makes the breasts and nipples more sensitive to touch. Estrogen keeps the breasts fuller and less droopy.
Types of Natural Estrogen
There are three types of natural estrogen produced by the ovaries and the fat tissue in your body; these are known as Estradiol, Estriol and Estrone.
If you need to take estrogen replacement therapy it is desirable to use bio-identical estrogens and not synthetic or animal derived estrogens such as Premarin. Bio-identical estrogens are synthesized in a laboratory from plant hormones - namely diosgenin in yams and stigmasterol in soy beans.
Bio-identical estrogens come in three different forms -
* Estradiol = E 2 is the strongest or most potent estrogen
* Estrone = E 1 is of medium strength
* Estriol = E 3 is the weakest estrogen of all the three estrogens
Estriol
Estriol is the safest of all forms of estrogen therapy. Even though estriol is not a potent estrogen, it has been proven to be effective for women with atrophic vaginitis. The symptoms of atrophic vaginitis include vaginal dryness, vaginal burning and irritation, vaginal itching and painful sexual intercourse.
Painful sexual intercourse is known as dyspareunia and is commonly caused by low estrogen levels. Generally speaking, after 4 weeks of treatment with estriol cream, the symptoms of atrophic vaginitis are relieved. Other good news is that estriol cream is free of side effects, except for an extremely rare possibility of allergy to the base used in the cream.
Estriol cream has also been found to be useful for preventing urinary tract infections in women with low estrogen levels. Estriol cream can also greatly reduce urinary incontinence caused by weak pelvic floor muscles, laughing, coughing and straining. The estriol cream can be inserted into the vagina or rubbed on the vulva and the vaginal opening.
