Chapter Fifteen

(Pre-Earth Life)

After Tiago left Rae in the garden, he went to the Destination Building. His heart ached to see how much she was hurting inside about not being born in the States with the rest of the group. As he’d walked and talked with her, he decided what he would do. He had never heard of it being done before, or even that it could be done, but he would at least try.

Arriving at the Destination Building, Tiago approached the big glass desk where several counselors were sitting. In the long halls, many of Tiago’s fellow spirits were laughing and talking excitedly about their coming births. Everyone seemed content. For the moment, there was no waiting at the desk.

“Yes? What can I help you with?” A man looked up as Tiago approached.

“I have a problem about my destination. That is, it’s more my teaching partner’s destination, and I wanted to know if there was any way I could . . .” Tiago paused. Even to himself his idea sounded ludicrous.

“Change places with her?” the councilor correctly finished Tiago’s sentence without a trace of surprise in his voice.

“Uh—I,” Tiago stammered. “I guess you get a lot of this, huh?”

“Actually, you’re the first. But I was prepared for your coming today. You must be Tiago.”

“You were expecting me?”

“I’d say advised would be more accurate. I was advised that maybe you’d come to see me. By the way, I’m Zoram. Come this way, Tiago. Let’s find a place where we can talk.”

Tiago followed Zoram through the door behind him which opened onto a large, comfortable looking room. In a far corner of the room a group of spirits were talking excitedly, their faint voices reaching Tiago and Zoram.

“Isn’t their excitement wonderful?” Zoram asked. “Oh, how well I remember my excitement when it was finally my turn. Of course, that was well over twenty-five hundred years ago—earth time, that is. Still, I remember that day like it was yesterday. That was why I asked if I could come and help out here in the Destination Building. It’s all so exciting!”

“Have I messed up?” asked Tiago, hardly hearing what Zoram was saying. “I’m not questioning the Lord—I believe His way is best—but I wondered if maybe things would still work out if I went down in Rae’s place. She really wants to work with computers, you see, and she’s terrified that she won’t find the gospel.”

“Well, maybe you’ll go on a mission and baptize her, Tiago.”

“I thought of that, but I haven’t been foreordained to serve a mission. I’ve heard of people being foreordained to serve and then not serve, but can people serve if they haven’t been foreordained?”

“It is possible,” Zoram said.

“I would give anything to be able to preach the gospel to Rae, but how can I be sure I’ll be able to? What if I go astray? What if something happens to me? Either way, I can’t let Rae down. I love her too much.” Tiago’s voice became even more passionate. “I want her to go down to live with my member parents—I know they’ll teach her right.
