Beyond Homework: Learning Together in Real Life
Donât limit your learning times together to homework sessions. Learning occurs all the time in the hundreds of interactions that take place between you and your child every day. Remember that your child learned one of the most complex skills in the worldâthe English languageâjust by listening to you and your friends speak and practicing the patterns he heard. There are many activities you can share with him that will naturally provide rich opportunities for academic growth. Games, for example, are excellent learning tools. Word games such as Scrabble and anagrams teach spelling and vocabulary skills. Strategy games, including chess, checkers, Go, and many card games, stimulate logical problem-solving capabilities. Games like Monopoly offer opportunities for arithmetic computation. Other activities such as cooking, carpentry, gardening, shopping, and animal care provide the basis for learning hundreds of skills and competencies. Itâs important to keep in mind, however, that these activities should be engaged in for their own sakeâbecause theyâre intrinsically worthwhileâand not because they teach specific academic objectives. Pressuring kids to learn in this way, or even pointing out to them in the course of an activity that they are learning something, may sour them to future experiences of this kind. Trust that these activities help your child learn, and focus your energies on seeing to it that he is engaged and excited, not on whether heâs getting the skill or objective you want him to learn.
