Chapter 25
Eric had to take a piss, but he didnât want to. Taking a piss meant he had to get up, and getting up meant that he would have to unwrap himself from beneath the wool blanket he had stolen from the Goodwill store, and step back out into the coldâsomething he really didnât want to do. He groaned and told himself that he could hold it, and tried to go back to sleep. But trying meant lying still, and the longer he lay still, the stronger the pressure on his bladder became.
âShit.â
He sat up and checked on Brian, who was wrapped in his own wool blanket. He was sound asleep. He should be, Eric thought. Especially after the way he had stuffed his face at Chick-Fil-A. Who knew a ten-year-old kid could eat two chicken sandwiches, two orders of waffle fries, and gulp down two large lemonades within a span of fifteen minutes? Eric had only had one order of the sandwich and fries with a coke. He felt as though he could have eaten two, maybe even three orders, but he wanted to save as much of the money he had gotten from the cop. He would have kept Brian to only one order also, but the kid was hungry.
Eric groaned again and then worked his way out of the cocoon he had formed. He and Brian were sleeping in a Lincoln Town Car. Its rear end was smashed in. It had no tires. The hood was bent, and its engine was gone. Its passenger door was dented in, but the driverâs door was unharmed. The windows were intact, although the rear windshield was spider webbed and would probably shatter if sneezed on just right. The front windshield had a diagonal crack running from the upper left to the bottom right. It was a stylish car that had seen its demise far too soon, and now its final resting place was the junk yard, where it was providing temporary shelter for the night.
They had tried to find shelter in the junkyard before, but theyâd never been able to get in because of a pit bull that was usually on the grounds roaming free. But tonight had been their lucky night because the dog had been nowhere to be found, and so theyâd scaled the fence and struck gold with the Lincoln. Eric thought about trying to fight the need to step outside again, but couldnât.
He looked over at Brian in the backseat again, and then opened the driverâs door, slid past the steering wheel, which had been pushed back slightly from the impact of whatever crash it had gotten into, and got out of the car. Like a slap, the middle-of-the-night breeze hit him in the face. âShit!â he said again.
His coat still on, he zipped it up and then walked to the front of the car to relieve himself. The wind whipped bitterly again, and for a split second the urge to pee disappeared. But that was only for a second.
