First of all, “neglect”? Where do you see neglect when a mother is there for her baby’s every waking and sleeping moment, tending to all the child’s needs? Second of all, “socialization”? What little socialization infants engage in needs to be with their mommy—not some other infant. Children nurtured by a loving, attentive parent must have an advantage over kids “raised” by other kids—remember the movie Lord of the Flies? There was a situation where peers dominated over adult supervision and earlier moral training; the children became vicious amoral animals.

The fact is, a mommy can take a child to parties, the park, or relatives’ and friends’ homes and “socialize” all that is necessary and healthy for any child.

One SAHM was sitting in her six-month-old daughter’s pediatrician’s office, leafing through the books on the table. She had begun reading a section in one of the books, about the changes and challenges of the coming months of a child’s development, when she came upon the following: “Make sure other people who provide care and supervision for your baby understand the importance of forming a loving and comforting relationship with your child.”

This mom wrote me that she read it ten times because she just couldn’t believe it!
