“Aye, Goody Mags, there’s still plenty of raisin cake. Go help yourself. Unless you’d like someone to fetch it?” He began to raise his hand, to catch the eye of one of the serving wenches.

Her gnarled hand stayed him. “Nah, she’d like to bring me a short ration. At my age, I take my pleasures where I can.”

“Then go, and eat what you will. You might want to get there before Maryam’s family.” He watched her hobble across the square, waving her empty plate and calling out for the children to respect age and let her go first. Her path took her in front of Isolde.

Harmon willed his heart to slow and struggled to keep his expression under control. The surge he’d felt when he took Isolde’s hand had rocked him a bit. She commanded a greater amount of Power than he’d thought. She was also much more beautiful than he remembered from his dreams.

She sat before his cottage, between that windbag Cedd and a chattering Kara. Her head nodded and she ate, but he could tell her thoughts lay not with her companions or the food.

Goddess, what a woman!

Black Isolde. She was named well, with her coal-black tresses and large dark eyes. Some might consider her too tall and robust, but in her he saw the strength he needed. She looked to be a woman who could bring a caravan across the desert, lead troops to storm a castle, or wrestle a steer into submission.

By the Green Man’s beard, she would be a blessing to bed, and a pleasure to bleed Power from. It cost him a moment of concentration to will his cockstand to relax. He no longer feared draining her completely. She clearly had Power to spare. His mind reeled at what he might accomplish with her assistance.

Tonight was as good a night as any to test his theory. If she proved able to increase his Power sufficiently, he would arrange for a ritual in a few days. The half-moon would serve, being a time of balance between light and dark. After all, ‘twas balance he sought to restore to this part of the world. Once that task was completed, he would wait and see what turned up for him next. He would be sorry to leave this place. In his welcome speech this eve he’d spoken the truth: here he’d found an acceptance unrivalled elsewhere. If only he could be other than he was. Too soon, he would feel the Call and move on. He must, before the darkness that dogged his travels caught up with him. He did 91

not yet feel ready to face it, and he would not endanger these people who had shown him such acceptance and kindness.

He began to cross the square. His steps faltered and turned aside. It had been years since he’d wooed a woman, well before his training began. He thought back to the youth he’d been so long ago, and how he had approached the object of his desire.
