Chapter Seventeen

Felix

Felix stole the first bicycle he could find, and rode back to their hotel as fast as he could, then ditched the bike and power-walked through the lobby, his face turned away from the night staff on the front desk like he was really interested in the mass-produced art on the walls.

He got to the room and removed his double, washed his face, then changed clothes and printed a whole new face and cleared the room out. He was done in under twenty minutes, and left just as quickly as he’d entered, pocketing the car keys from the luggage, and posting the room key through the slot in the box in the lobby on his way out.

Step one was complete.

He couldn’t stop worrying about Benedict. If Felix stuck to the escape plan, how was Benedict going to get home?

On skis, probably.

Felix snorted at the thought as he let himself into the car and started the engine. He couldn’t keep this vehicle for long, but it would get him out of the city, and then he would be able to switch it out for another.

The extraction plan was convoluted, but that was fine. Felix didn’t need anything to be simplified to remember it. Twenty steps was just as easy as three, and as he drove toward the nearest motorway he began to remind himself of those steps.

Drive out of the capital. Go to the next town along, then wind down mountain passes until he hit a specific village. Go to a particular location, miles from any CCTV cameras, and offload the necessary equipment from the trunk. Assemble the bike, switch faces yet again, set fire to the car, and then ride the bike ten miles to the safehouse and switch faces and vehicles yet again.

By the time he reached the Rosavian border, he should have absolutely no trail that could be followed, and then he would be home free.

Satisfied that he knew what he was doing, Felix glanced to the top left of his HUD and blinked three times to activate voice commands. “Call D-Ops,” he said. “Flag as urgent.”

He drove a mile before the small red light in the corner of his display turned green to show that he’d been connected, but he waited for a voice to be sure it was D-Ops he was talking to.

“QM,” she said, sounding quiet, but alert. “Report?”

“I have it,” he breathed. He was careful to drive just under the speed limit, and kept one eye on his mirrors. “But something tipped off bank security. Specialist Six held them off so I could get out. He should be behind me, but I want to pass this on in case I don’t reach the border.”

D-Ops paused for a brief moment, then sighed. “I see. What do you have?”

“It’s Gustav von Jansen,” Felix said. “There was some daisy-chaining, but ultimately the account that provided the money that paid off Mr. Horn belongs to Gustav von Jansen, the Grechzen ambassador to Rosavia.” Felix bit his lip a second, then added, “He’s paying off Ida von Tarr, too.
