THIRTY-SIX

BILLIE ANN

I arrived at the hospital, and a sterile smell filled my nostrils, making me feel even more uneasy. As I walked into the room, my mom and dad were there waiting for me. My mom’s eyes were red-rimmed, and my dad looked like he hadn’t slept in days, which I was sure he hadn’t.

“Aunt Tessie is here too,” my mom said, nodding toward my aunt who was sitting in a chair by the window.

She looked at me when she heard her name, tears streaming down her face.

“How is Alexandra doing?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

My mom shook her head. “Not good. They haven’t told us much, but she is on life support. She was in surgery for two hours, but they might have to do more.”

“And Aunt Tessie? How’s she holding up?”

“Not good,” my mom said. “She had to go identify Jeremy at the morgue, and she’s been broken ever since. The doctor gave her a sedative, and now she’s just sitting there.”

I felt a knot form in my stomach. Poor Aunt Tessie. She had lost her husband three years ago to cancer and had been heartbroken ever since. She was finally getting back on her feet, and now this?

I walked over to my aunt and took her hand. She looked up at me with a pained expression.

“I’m so sorry,” I said, trying to hold back my own tears. “Is there anything I can do to help?”

Aunt Tessie looked up at me, her eyes red and puffy. She just shook her head and buried her face in her hands. I could see her whole body shaking with sobs. Finally, she looked up at me again, and petted my arm. “No, honey,” she said, her voice barely audible. “There’s nothing anyone can do. It’s just too much to bear.”

I sat with Aunt Tessie for a while, holding her hand and trying to comfort her as best I could. My parents sat on the other side of the room, looking just as devastated as Aunt Tessie. It was hard to believe that just a few days ago, everything had been normal. Now, our entire world had been turned upside down.

As I sat there, I couldn’t help but think about Jeremy. He had been such a good guy—always smiling, always making everyone laugh. It was hard to imagine that he was gone. And Alexandra…

I couldn’t bear to think of what Alexandra was going through. She had always been so full of life, so full of energy. It was hard to imagine her hooked up to machines, fighting for her life. I felt a knot of anger form in the pit of my stomach. She was just a kid—fourteen years old. How could something like this happen to her? It wasn’t fair. None of it was fair. I felt a lump form in my throat as tears threatened to spill down my cheeks. I leaned over to Aunt Tessie and whispered in her ear. “We’re gonna get through this,” I said.
