SEVENTEEN

Some cockwomble was saying that everything is a matter of life and death.

It’s not.

It’s a matter of death.

If you think about it logically.

Killagal Blog, 2022

The incident room was busy. Caplan had updated Linden on what had been said at Rettie. Essentially nothing. Linden replied that she was winning the argument to get all relevant documentation released. Caplan finished her daily phone call with Cordelia, then gave a brief but necessary statement about Gillian’s status in the inquiry. They had played the protective-custody card. They should concentrate now on proving who killed Edward Maxwell. Miranda and Rowan were being interviewed in the station. Duguid McCleary and Gail Halliday were still up at Ben o’ Tae. It was reported that everybody was being cooperative.

Caplan had left messages for Arlene McCaskill at both the numbers she had. She wrote it up on the wall then looked over her shoulder. There was a lot of activity on the sightings map, with timings going off in all directions. McPhee had asked the big question: how had Gillian got from Ben o’ Tae to the bridge and back?

‘We can track that figure off the bridge. Let’s say it is Gillian. Here she’s walking near the roundabout at 0040 hours, then up at the Osprey, the restaurant.’

‘Why is she keeping out the way? Avoiding the main road while dressing in a way that attracts attention?’

‘Well, nobody said she was sane. And now, past the restaurant, she disappears.’

‘What’s up there?’ asked Caplan.

‘A residential estate.’

‘Have we done a door-to-door?’

‘On the lower half, nothing as yet. We’ve checked it and double-checked the footage, and she doesn’t appear again, so she must’ve gone into one of the houses. Do we have any intel of her knowing anybody in that area? Craigo? How’s the grapevine on that one?’

‘Gillian grew up here. I think we’d know about close friends. And who in their right mind would help her get away with murder?’

‘Somebody who was scared of her? Anything on her mobile phone? The one she shared with Rowan?’

Mackie replied, ‘No calls except to pizza take-out, curry take-out, her family. No numbers not traced, no communication between her and Maxwell.’

‘But we only have one of Maxwell’s phones, can we be sure?’

‘All the numbers she called are accounted for. Can you access the dark web in a café or a library? Killagal posted one blog after the fire.’

‘But maybe written before she hurt her hand? And is this stuff within her IT skills?’

McPhee said, ‘Can’t find her mobile device, can’t find Maxwell’s mobile devices.’ He shrugged. ‘That’s odd.’

‘I’m still working my way through a long list,’ said Mackie defensively. ‘I’m very busy.’

They looked at the screen, watching the figure walk smartly up the hill and to the right, disappearing out the range of the camera. ‘I suspect that flash of white every now and again is the dressing on Gillian’s right hand.’

‘We need to pick one good image and get it clarified. But how did she get from Ben o’ Tae to the bridge and back? Sorry, I’m repeating myself.
