In once again fusing the two aspects that the Islamic tradition in the subcontinent had historically separated, Faruqi tried to elevate the importance and significance of the office of the caliph. In advancing such a claim, however he drew quite close to Khomeini’s own conception of vilayat-i faqih. This observation does not only uncover a further instance of local-transnational dialectics in Sunni-Shiʿi sectarianism in Pakistan. It also shows how tempting the Guardianship of the Jurisprudent as an alternative model of sovereignty really was. Sectarian religious scholars in Pakistan were drawn to it because it provided them with the tools to rethink Islam in entirely novel, politicized ways.
