Chapter Eleven

“Good morning, Allie,” Steve Anderson said. Steve was the manager at the co-op. I wheeled in the cart of jams and jellies I had made.

“Good morning, Steve,” I said, smiling. “Thank goodness for these carts, because I would never be able to carry all these jars in.”

“They’re a back saver, for sure.”

“I’ve got a surprise for you.”

His eyes went to the jars on the cart. I had canned the jams and jellies using pint and half-pint jars, and I had made two dozen of each size.

“Oh? What are you bringing me today? I sold out of most of the apricot jam that you brought the other day.”

“Already?” I asked, surprised.

He nodded. “Sure, I told everybody it was made by the famous Allie McSwain and everybody had to have a jar.”

I chuckled. “That’s good to hear, but it’s also bad because now I’ve got to make a lot more of the apricot preserves. Today I brought you lemon marmalade, strawberry jam, and grape jelly.”

He nodded appreciatively. “Well, thank goodness you’re stocking us up with a variety. The jams and jellies section is starting to become more popular because people are coming in to see what you’ve got there.”

“That’s good to hear. I was wondering, do you have any cherries?” The cherry preserves that Mr. Winters had requested were going to be an awful lot of work, but he had been faithful to provide us with information on past cases, and I didn’t want to disappoint him. Besides that, he might have more information that he was holding out on me about the current case.

“I’ve got several boxes in the back. How many do you need?”

I sighed, thinking about it. “There’s so much work involved in pitting them that I think I’m only going to take one box today. I’m sure you’ll get some more in, and if I feel like making more, I’ll get them then. I’d hate to pick up too many boxes of cherries and have them go bad on me before I could get the preserves made.”

“Cherry preserves? Now that sounds promising.”

I nodded. “It sounds like a lot of hard work is what it sounds like. I’m going to put these jars on the shelf, and I’ll bring you the cart so you can put the box of cherries on it for me to take out to my car.”

“Sounds like a deal.”

I headed over to the shelves where my jams and jellies sat. The co-op already had some jams and jellies that they brought in from a supplier, but mine were local and freshly made. He wasn’t kidding about almost selling out of the apricot jam. There were only four jars left. I smiled. I enjoyed making the jams and jellies, but they were all a lot of work. I had to make some more of the apricot, so I thought I had better pick up a box of those along with the cherries.

“I heard you were making jams and jellies for the co-op, Allie,” a voice said from behind me.
