In 1971 Charles J. Fillmore, an American linguist and an Emeritus Professor of Linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley, asked students to watch a film of car crashes shot by a local safety council. He asked the students to estimate the speed at which the cars had crashed. The students’ estimates varied according to Fillmore’s chosen verb used to describe the crash impact.
