CHAPTER 5

Cassie had just zipped up her last piece of luggage when a knock

sounded at her door. Who could that be? She certainly wasn’t expecting

anyone.

Possibly Erik coming to apologize and beg her to return. Now who

was dreaming?

She straightened and walked to answer the door. Keeping the

security chain in place, she cracked it open, then blinked and gulped

when she recognized the tall, mesmerizing man standing there.

Releasing the chain, she pulled the door open. “What are you doing

here?” she demanded. A rather harsh greeting, she thought, but he

deserved it for giving her the most earth shattering experience of her

life and then leaving without a word.

It felt as though years had passed since she’d last seen him. In the

course of that time she’d been made to feel like everyone she had

trusted had deserted her. He had been no better, leaving no note, no

way to get in touch with him, and making it seem as though he’d fallen

off the edge of the earth—or, even worse, had never been real in the

first place. Well, at least now she could leave knowing he had actually

existed and it hadn’t been some kind of crazy dream after all.

“May I come in?”

Hesitating for a fraction of a moment, she stepped back from the

doorway, allowing him room to enter. “I don’t have much time. I need

to catch a plane in a few hours.”

Once inside, he turned to face her. He was just as she

remembered—if not more than that as the sunlight streaming through

the window accentuated the molten, tawny glow of his skin. How she

yearned to touch him—one more time, to sink onto his smooth, sinewy

body, feeling him slide against her, inside her.

She whirled away from him to look out the window before her

searing memories overpowered her and she did something she would

regret. Too bad.

“I would like you to stay.”

She could feel her heartbeat thundering in her chest. “I can’t.” Her

gaze caught the reflected glitter of a domed temple in the distance and

regret spread through her at the thought of moments she would never

experience. “You’re too late. I need to get back to the States and see if I

can prepare another proposal for a new excavation site. There’s no

longer any reason for me to stay here.”

“Why? What has happened?”

Somewhat more composed, she turned back to him and met his

steady, intent look.

“I trusted someone and he took advantage of that trust to steal from

me.”

He stepped closer to her. She stepped back. How much did she

really know about him? She’d been burned by one man she trusted.

What did Khafeel want from her? If she allowed him to touch her, she

knew all her fine determination to use her common sense would fly out

the window and she’d be lost to the myriad of senses he seemed to

instill in her.

“I’m sorry you have been hurt, Cassandra. I have handled things

badly. Please stay, just one more day. There is something I need to

show you—a reason for you to stay.”

“I think you’ve shown me about all I can handle on this trip.” She

couldn’t allow herself to give in to her feelings for this man.
