The drive to my place is silent. I can feel the anger rolling off of him in waves, but something tells me this drastic shift in emotions has nothing to do with me. Regardless, I decide not to press him for info, not when I’m on edge myself. I’d love to say that I’m badass and could care less what the vampire underworld thinks of me, but that would be a boldfaced lie. If last night taught me anything, it’s that being around humans is dangerous and hard, and unless I want to spend the rest of eternity alone- which, I don’t, I need to play nice with the other vampires of this city. How the hell I’m supposed to do that, I have no idea.

I take the fastest shower of my life, rub some leave-in conditioner into my long golden-brown hair, and twist and clip it on top of my head. Turning to my closet, I slide a few pieces of clothing back and forth, quickly realizing I have no freaking idea what one wears to a vampire group meeting. This isn’t the type of thing you can do an internet search for, so I do the next best thing.

“Hey, yoga pants or jeans?” I call out to Bane, who is presently standing in the tiny kitchen, drinking another one of my beers and eyeing me like a ravenous lion.

“While I’d love to peel those skin-tight pants off of you some time, I don’t think I’ll be able to focus on any underworld business if you’re wearing them.”

“Ahh, worried you’ll miss some important words from your vampire king if you’re staring at my ass all night?” I ask, flashing him a mischievous smile as I tug a pair of jeans off a hanger.

“Something like that,” he says, taking a long sip from the bottle in his hand. “Not to mention the number of vampires I’ll have to kill when their eyes linger on you for too long.”

I narrow my eyes and flash him a challenging look over my shoulder.

“What, are you one of those alpha types that can’t stand when another guy looks at your girl?” I ask, sarcasm soaking every word.

In a second, he’s behind me, one hand snaked around my waist, slipping between the folds of the towel while the other is wrapped around my neck, tilting my head to the side to expose the skin he bit into last night. I feel the denim slip through my fingers as a chill runs down the length of my spine, and a second teases my breasts. He runs the tip of his fangs along my skin, sending little ripples of anticipation through my body with every move.

“You could say that,” he whispers. His voice is husky and breathless, and I wonder if he’s going to take me right here. When his fangs and hands disappear, and he takes a step back, my heart and stomach sink at the same time.
