3.7 Conclusion
We have proposed that imagination and make-believe do not just contribute some kind of intangible “creativity” to the design process but are central to how ideas are generated, examined, reflected, developed, evaluated and ultimately realised. But they are not simply psychological faculties which are invoked when required, they are triggered and afforded by external props or stories (such as those design props (above) afford).
Indeed, a number of researchers have begun to conceptualise this “design imagination” as something which takes the form of reflexive conversations whether between people or between persons and their artefacts (Bucciarelli 1988; Schön 1983). With this comes the notions of perspective shifting and seeing (the design) as.
In this context, it has been argued that design communication is better thought of as “productive force” (Dong 2007, p. 5) that constitutes rather than merely expresses the design object. This view is consistent with the notion that thought is disclosed in the materiality of communication rather than preceding it (Merleau-Ponty 1945; Vygotsky 1987).
