CHAPTER 9 – THE INTERVIEW

The weekend seemed to drag by. Bob spent much of his time researching Galaxy Construction and working on his interview preparation. By the time his interview came around, he felt as prepared as possible.

“Bob, good to see you again! Come on in.” Stan Johnson was all smiles as he welcomed Bob into his office. “Thanks for coming in today. I’m really excited about this job and you just may be the guy we need.”

“Thanks, Stan. I appreciate your confidence.” Bob was a little surprised by Stan’s excitement. They really hadn’t spent much time together, but he wasn’t about to complain. If Stan was that interested in Bob for this job, then Bob was interested too.

Stan was enthusiastic and jumped right into it. It seemed to Bob that Stan could hardly keep his seat. “Bob, I know we just met a couple of weeks ago and you did an excellent job of telling me about yourself, your experience and all that, so let me tell you more about this job. We are trying to implement a new accounting system and we’re not sure that some of our people have the right stuff to get this project punched over the top. So, we want to bring in someone that’s a hard charger – knows all about big company financial systems and knows how to manage other people. We’ve got some folks that, well, may not be the brightest bulbs in the box, if you know what I mean, and we need someone who can look over their shoulders and make sure they stay on the right track. Keep their noses to the grindstone – know what I mean? Now, I don’t want to be talking out of school and putting bad ideas in your head, but we need someone who can come in and push this ball over the goal line. Based on our meeting awhile back, I think you may be the guy. What do you think about that?”

Bob didn’t know what to think. What was this guy really talking about? ‘Not the brightest bulbs in the box?’ Was this any way to talk about your staff? But... it was a job – which was something that he needed. “Well, Stan, this sounds interesting. Can you tell me more about what you’re looking for? What kinds of responsibilities are involved with ‘pushing this ball over the goal line’?”

Stan looked a little taken aback. “Well, manager-type responsibilities. You’ve been a manager. You know. It’s things like checking the clerks’ work, making sure they didn’t screw up. Watching their attendance. Training them in the way we do things. Keeping them on their toes. Making sure they aren’t wasting time. Firing bad ones and hiring new ones. Cracking the whip. The usual kind of stuff. Are you interested?”

Bob’s head was spinning, but, he kept telling himself, this is a job. I need to keep myself in the game, at least until I know what this guy is talking about. “Of course I am.
