​Twenty-Four

With his second cup of coffee in his hand, Joel slid open the glass door that connected his home office to one of the many terraces that wrapped around his home. The sun was still climbing in the clear blue sky as he took in the view that never seemed to get old to him, no matter how long he’d lived here. Ultimately, it had been the view that had made him purchase the house–and keep it after Marcus’s dramatic exit from his life.

In the beginning stages of that relationship, Marcus had seemed like a deeply caring man. It had bothered him that Joel still owned the house where he’d been assaulted, so when they’d decided to leave London and return to the US, Marcus had insisted on purchasing another property. Not to mention, Joel’s budget had significantly increased. Marcus had found this irresistible piece of land, but Joel had fallen in love with it.

Far more than he’d ever been in love with Marcus, apparently.

But Joel was beginning to realize that he hadn’t been quite so in love with any of his previous partners. That wasn’t to say that he hadn’t had genuine feelings for them, but there had been so many other factors involved in his decision to embark upon those relationships. And it had always been a distinct decision on his part, never a matter of falling in love.

Perhaps he’d gotten what he’d asked for in those circumstances. Of course they’d lacked passion! The relationships hadn’t been borne of passion in the first place; he’d convinced himself that other things were more important. He’d had a pros and cons list in his head every time, weighing out compatibility like buying almonds in bulk.

Not this time. No, Hayden had gone from seriously impossible to impossibly serious with such swiftness that Joel hadn’t even had the time to make a list, even in his mind. He’d been told a time or two that physically making a list was considered...impolite, but that hadn’t stopped him from making them mentally. But this time, as he forced himself to focus on compiling one, he realized that it felt disrespectful.

How many times had Hayden verbalized that he didn’t give two shits about the money? How many more times had he proven it with his actions and reactions to the oftentimes frustrating circumstances of their mostly secret relationship? The amount of money that he’d spent on Hayden in the months they’d been together was paltry, mere pocket change compared to what he’d spent in that amount of time in past relationships. And Hayden couldn’t care less.

No, Hayden lit up when they got to spend more time together than he thought they’d have. Or when Joel remembered something he’d said weeks before. He didn’t argue when Joel spent money on him, but he’d yet to ask for anything. In fact, the ornery grin that had carved its way onto Hayden’s face when Joel had had no choice but to let him pay for something lived rent free in Joel’s mind.
