I was chilled to the bone by the time I opened the door to my apartment. I removed my lace-up boots and coat and hat and put each away tidily, then headed to the kitchen where I got up on my footstool and reached for my bottle of whiskey. Much to my disappointment it was nearly empty. It seemed I’d just bought a bottle and I craned my neck to be certain I didn’t have one hidden farther back. I remembered then that Harry and I had had a drink before going out and then later to celebrate the snowfall. Of course, I was happy to share everything I had with him, although a little appreciation would have been nice.

I poured the last of the contents into a glass and took a sip straight, so it could seep into my body and warm me. I added water to the rest and opened the door to my refrigerator. A small piece of canned ham, a couple of eggs, part of a cabbage that looked wilted beyond redemption and a half loaf of bread. I was going to have to do some shopping and that was all there was to it. I took out the ham and bread, found some mustard and made a quick sandwich, then I sat down at the table and thought of all that had happened in the past twenty-four hours.

My evening with Harry had turned out disappointing. He must be under pressure at work, so I didn’t want to add to that. Surely, we’d get together for New Year’s Eve and if the snow kept up everybody would be in a mood for celebration. The meeting with Bill Muldowney had been interesting. He seemed a nice man and I hoped he hadn’t had anything to do with Charlie Beale’s death. Best of all, however, was my contact with Katherine. She was young and she had a life ahead of her—if she would give herself the chance.
