Chapter Eight

“I knew you’d do it,” Rose said to Lily later that night as they sat on the floor of Lily’s Brooklyn apartment, eating Rose’s artichoke dip with homemade Parmesan crackers and drinking white wine.

“How did you know I’d do it? I didn’t even know I was going to do it until I met that boy today.”

“Yes, you did,” Rose said, dipping a cracker and biting into it. “You like him.”

“Oh, Rose!”

Rose laughed and began singing a song from Cinderella.

“Zip it, sis.”

Rose stopped. “Come on, Lil, every girl loves a fairy tale. Especially this one.”

“I’m only doing this to help out,” Lily insisted. “It’s not personal, honestly. Look at the newspapers—you can already see that they’re focusing all sorts of negative publicity on his supposed exploits. Brittany Oliver has suggested there’s a raunchy sex tape out there and I wouldn’t be surprised if she went so far as to digitally alter one she already has.” Lily shook her head and dipped a cracker. “It’s pathetic. I really can see how much better it would be for him to have the appearance of a nobody at his side.”

Rose reached over and mussed her sister’s hair. “Aw, come on, Lil. You’re not a nobody.”

“You know what I mean.”

Rose sobered. “Yes, I do. And I can see the merits of this plan, honestly. It’s a good idea and I’m glad you’re helping him out. But I still think you’ve got just a little bit of personal interest in doing it.”

Lily looked at her. “Can we change the subject now, please?”

“Okay. I actually do have something important to talk to you about.” She reached for her bag and pulled it over to her. “George Smith, Warren’s private investigator, has come up with a little more information on our sister.”

Lily’s heart leapt. “Has he found her?”

“Not exactly.” Rose took some papers out of the bag. “But he’s found some information.” She pulled a sheet of paper out and examined it. “Here it is. As of last June, she was working for an international aid foundation in eastern Europe.” She passed it to Lily.

“What, like the Peace Corps?”

“Exactly.”

Lily frowned and looked at the paper. “Laurel Standish.” Tears burned in her eyes and she looked at her sister. “First a name, and now…now a job. A life. She’s really starting to seem real.”

Rose’s eyes grew bright as well. “I know what you mean. When Warren first told me about her, it was an amazing concept but I don’t think I really started to believe it fully until now.”

Lily looked back at the papers. “She’s obviously a really good person. Look at all this work she’s done. She’s a nurse.” She gave a half laugh. “She’s done us one better in the taking care of people department.”

“At least we know it’s a family trait.”

“Grew up in upstate New York. Her mother died last year. Oh, that’s sad. But her father’s still up there.” Excitement surged in Lily’s breast. “Do you think we should go talk to him?”

“Absolutely. Oh!
