Chapter Fourteen

Bronwyn boarded the train at Wanstead and found a spare seat. It was only eight stops to Chigwell on the Central Line, and although the station had been full, it wasn’t as full as it had been on the Friday night journey. She hadn’t planned on staying the night at Nacho’s, but that’s how it had turned out. Happy was far too happy for her liking though. At first, it had been an enjoyable novelty being made happy by Happy, but the novelty had soon worn off. Now, she was frazzled from an over-indulgence of contortion, sweating and bodily fluids, which had made her skin uncomfortably raw. She needed a long hot bath, and generous applications of vaginal moisturiser and Vaseline.

She called Xena.

‘You took your time,’ Xena said.

‘I could take no time at all and just get on with my life, if you prefer?’

‘I’m in a bad mood. Why are you ringing?’

‘Not to get an earful from you, that’s for sure.’

‘Ignore me.’

‘I wish I’d done that in the first place.’

‘Well?’

A man in a pin-striped suit sitting next to her cleared his throat in her ear.

She stared at him.

‘There are other people in this carriage, you know.’

‘Just a minute,’ she said to Xena, and then addressed the man. ‘What’s your problem, fuckwit?’

‘I don’t want to listen to you on the phone.’

‘Well, don’t then. I’m trying to have a private conversation with a client, so fuck off somewhere else and stop bothering me.’

‘I was sitting here before you boarded.’

She put her hand in the pocket of her jacket. ‘I have the means to defend myself if it becomes necessary.’

‘I’m not going to attack you.’

‘You’re verbally attacking me now – what’s next?’

The man got up and walked to the other end of the carriage.

‘Okay,’ she said into the phone. ‘Some arsehole who thought he owned the place.’

‘And you explained the error of his ways?’

‘Of course. So, as I was saying, Doctor Sandra Paine isn’t who she says she is.’

‘I knew it.’

‘Oh, she thinks she is who she says she is, but she’s not.’

‘That’s helpful.’

‘Her real name is Ruth Morgan. She was abducted from outside a charity shop on Ilford High Street as a nine-month-old child by a woman called Evelyn Walters who had just given birth to a stillborn foetus in Kenwood Maternity Hospital. Mrs Walters re-named the child Sandra. Evelyn Walters then met Lewis Paine. They got married, moved to Woodford Green and the rest you already know.’

‘Do you think what’s happening to her now has any bearing on what happened then?’

‘No.’

‘Do you think I should tell her?’

‘That’s not my decision to make, but what would be the point?’

‘She has a right to know the truth.’

‘She also has a right to have her secrets kept secret. Would you want to know? Would you want someone to tell you that your whole life has been a lie?’

‘Mmmm! I’ll give it some thought.’

‘Think hard and choose wisely, Grasshopper. I also examined Sandra Paine’s finances, and came to the conclusion that she’d be unlikely
