CHAPTER NINE
Both night security guards were at the cocktail party, with my permission, so I was able to leave the golf cart near the gates, move everything into my old bronze-colored sedan, and let myself out of the compound.
The spell book sat in the footwell of the passenger seat, still wrapped in my dress. I didnât feel good about that. A book containing life and death secrets should be under lock and key, not slinky silver. Also, what if the bumpy ride in my beater caused it to burp out some unintended magic? I knew nothing of this type of thing. I wasnât a witch, nor even descended from witches. I was just someone with a few special abilities. I had better intuition than the average gal. A little extra charge on occasion. I didnât need to cast spells to get things done. But apparently, I needed to learn about them, and quickly, so that I could dodge them.
Why hadnât my mother told me about things like this?
Why hadnât I let her?
Why hadnât I accepted all this stuff was real before it bit me in the backside?
Now I was pushing my car to the max and hoping to find help in time. For all I knew Alba could spell herself hither and yon, or go old-school on a broom. She had never once struck me as someone magical. When others at the Briars prognosticated, Alba never joined in. Maybe it was because she was the only one, aside from Videa, who really had a gift. Or maybe she was just a regular woman who stole a spell book and decided to take it for a spin. Or, far worse, maybe someone was pulling her strings who knew a whole lot more about magic than either of us did.
All of these were good questions for another day. There were only two that mattered right now. Why me? And what could I do about it? Obviously I couldnât go back to the Briars knowing Alba was spelling to kill me.
One hand left the steering wheel and found the pendant that hung just under the neckline of my dress. I didnât need to fish it out. The energy it gave off penetrated the fabric. It was comfortingâeven more so than my beloved car, which had seen me through so much. What the car and I had together was everyday magic. What I had with this pendant was an exceptional buzz. Its designer, Sinda Joffrey, was the only one I knew of in Strathmore County who might have some answers for me. She hadnât seemed particularly concerned about her own safety, so hopefully I wasnât bringing more trouble to her doorstep than she could handle. Besides, her gatekeeper might be an even better informant.
I parked on a side street, collected my special package in its slinky wrapping, and ran down Main Street till I reached Haute Baubles. A deep fog had set in and a misty rain started falling. That hadnât been in the forecast.
