FIRE IN THE HOLE

Seeing those girls was good. Now Alex knew where they were. It had also done something else. Now Alex considered herself accountable for their safety. She had just made Natalie and the other girls a promise…

She could not break it.

Her eyes unconsciously narrowed as she edged along the tunnel. She muttered, ‘I will not break it.’

She surged on into the unknown dangers ahead, certain she’d soon encounter someone wanting her apprehended or worse… wanting her dead. Come on Kim… where are you?

The tunnel stretched on further than she remembered from her walk to the cell, though she was blindfolded then and likely more disoriented than she thought. She pushed on. What choice did she have? Suddenly she paused, certain she’d just heard a voice. Two voices? She wasn’t sure. Stone walls did weird things to sound so far underground. Nothing for it, Alex… gotta push on. There were more lights strung along the tunnel now, and the occasional flaming torch attached to the wall. Alex could see better, felt more sure of her footing, so she sped up, now jogging now along the tunnel. What the…?

She turned and retraced a few steps. She’d missed it initially, but a stone stairway carved directly into the rock curved up and out of view. On a hunch Alex took it, clambering up the uneven steps. She knew she was pretty far underground, so naturally believed going up should take her nearer to the surface.

Damn!

Alex emerged onto a kind of natural stone platform overlooking a vast chamber, probably the very heart of the tunnel complex, she guessed. Then she immediately ducked down out of sight. On the floor of the cavernous space stood dozens of soldiers and guards, milling around in groups, almost all of them smoking. They looked bored. Daring a glance over the edge, Alex saw no obvious way out and nothing she recognised from before. Shit. Where the hell’s the area I first came into?

There was a small opening on the far edge of the chamber, the other side of a kind of natural well or pit in the ground, but it didn’t look as if it led anywhere.

Alex feared she’d headed the wrong way, now even deeper into the cave system. This was looking like a dead end. After a final glance over the edge, she turned back down the stairs. Time weighed heavily on her. As she jumped down the last couple of steps, she slammed hard into a moving figure, knocking them both to the floor. Alex sprang to her haunches and pointed the gun at whoever the hell she’d hit, certain it was a guard ready to shoot without thinking twice.

To Alex’s great surprise, and his, it was Chan Lee, the man they had set out to help.

‘What the hell? Alex?’

‘Chan Lee?’ Alex breathed a sigh of relief. This was good. It meant Hiram was likely close. ‘Chan, where’s Hiram? There’s so much I need to tell him and so much we need to do.
