Chapter 21

Diner Dash

Allen sat in a booth at the diner across the table from Danny. As they waited for Tom and Christina to show up, Allen averted his gaze from his friend. Out of his three companions, Danny was the one he considered himself closest to. Danny was the first real friend his age that he’d made after Brad died. He’d spent much of the intervening years between that tragedy and entering High School alone. For a long while, his parents were quite worried about him. They were both surprised and relieved when Allen started regularly mentioning Danny in conversation.

That closeness was the reason Allen was acting so guarded. If anyone could detect something was wrong with Allen without him saying so, it was Danny. And he did.

“What is with you, dude?” Danny said, half in frustration, half in mirth.

Allen finally directed his gaze to his friend. He stared at him trying to work out a way of evading the question before giving a slow and grudging response.

“I… have something I need to talk to you guys about.”

“Ooo… mysterious!” Danny replied, widening his eyes dramatically, lifting both hands above the table, and waggling all his fingers at once. Then, dropping the act, he leaned forward and added, “Can I at least have a preview before the Wonder Twins show up?”

Allen’s lips tightened into a thin line. He said, “Sorry. No can do.”

“Aw, come on!” Danny said. “You can tell me. What is it, a big party planned at your house while the folks are gone? Or, you’ve been running guns to South American drug lords? Oh, wait, I’ve got it: you’re running away and joining the circus because they have an opening in the freak show!”

Allen stared unblinkingly back at his friend and replied, “I’d never steal your dream job.”

“That’s a relief,” Danny said with a grin as he leaned back in the booth.

The little bell over the diner door jingled and both boys turned their gazes to the entrance. Christina walked in followed by Tom. They looked around the place until they located Allen and Danny. The twins moseyed over and deposited themselves in the booth. Christina glided in beside Allen and Tom shooed Danny over so his large frame could fit next to the other kid.

“Did you guys hear the news?” Christina said without preamble.

“What? About Allen running away to join the circus?” Danny replied.

Christina glowered at him and said, “This isn’t a joke. Ms. Kris’s body disappeared from the morgue. It was on the news this morning.”

Danny blinked, his good-humored expression faded, then he said, “Wait. Seriously?”

“Dead serious,” Tom put in. “But it gets weirder.”

Danny flicked his gaze from Tom to Christina, then back to Tom. His brow drew down, uncertain whether or not he should believe them or if this was some kind of uncharacteristic prank from them.

“Weirder how?” Allen prompted, feeling a great pit form in his belly.

Christina, visibly disturbed, said, “The desk clerk was found dead. His body was stuffed in one of the morgue cabinets.
