Laysha Ward
“Leave things better than you found them.”
COLLEGE ATTENDED: Indiana University, bachelor’s degree in journalism; University of Chicago, master’s degree in nonprofit management and public policy from the School of Social Service Administration
OCCUPATION: Target Corporation, President of Community Relations and the Target Foundation
Target is one of those companies that completely understands their customer—someone trying to live life, staying hip to trends and necessities, without breaking the bank. A day rarely goes by when I don’t see a Target ad on TV, in a magazine, or on a billboard. Laysha Ward is the woman, brains, and genius behind their brilliant community engagement strategies.
I first met Laysha when she agreed to have Target as one of the main sponsors for the California Governor’s Conference for Women. She would kick off every conference with a speech about why she personally loved the empowerment of women, and why Target wanted to be a part of spreading the word, or as the Women’s Conference states it, “passing it on.” I have always been a huge fan of Target and all of the campaigns they choose to involve themselves in because they are always right on point with their message and find a way to make the brand accessible for everyone.
Laysha always knew that in order to get her foot in the door for any opportunities that should come her way, she needed to get a good education. Knowing that her biggest passion was giving back, she decided to apply for jobs that helped her stay true to who she is.
Being aware of your finances and understanding the meaning of being smart with your money is a huge part of the transition out of college. Laysha grew up being financially aware, but she had to be extra cautious when balancing the growth of her career while taking out loans for her master’s program.
Lucky for us, Laysha and her team at Target totally get what it’s like coming out of college today. They have campaigns that promote the importance of getting a good education and raise money to keep kids in school. Whether it is promoting education or being aware of saving money, Laysha doesn’t just talk the talk, she walks the walk on a level that most of us can only imagine.
