BUILD THE CHARACTER BASE MESH

Joseph had a general idea of the SteamGuard character but needed to flesh it out more. Using Photoshop he created quick silhouettes of various poses to establish proportions for the creature.

After settling on the basic form and proportions he wanted, he made a quick low-res head model in 3ds Max. In order to further develop SteamGuard’s character and personality, Joseph exported the model to ZBrush for sculpting.

Using ZBrush sculpting tools, Joseph detailed the head, painting a texture directly onto the model using ZBrush’s very simple and easy-to-use polypainting system, which is discussed in more detail beginning at step 12.
