Making artâbe it drawing, painting, music, dance, writing, or any other form of creative expressionâis a powerful process in which terrible experiences and dark emotions can be used to create something wonderful.
COMMIT TO GETTING BETTER
Tenacity and commitment are imperative to healing. To get better, to feel better, you have to keep on living, even while you hurt, and keep on moving in spite of obstacles. âThe decision to heal was a big decision, one I had to make almost daily,â Akaya says. âIt was a commitment. âI will figure this out. I will heal from this. I will not put up with half a life. I will not!ââ According to Sady Doyle, being OK means merely that the event or events that hurt you, the terrible things that happened to you, happened a long time ago. With time, and making the choice to face what happened and move forward (over and over again if necessary), the sexual abuse that hurt you will have less and less pull over you. Youâll realize that you donât think about it as often, that it just doesnât affect your daily life the way it once did. As Doyle writes, âYou can get past âOK.â You can get way past âOK.â You can actually get to âgreat.â Thatâs where a lot of the sexual assault survivors Iâve met have ended up: GREAT. So Iâm not telling you that you have to be happy now. Iâm telling you that itâs possible, and common. And one day, you might end up there, and not even realize it until you take a second to look around.â
