Making art—be it drawing, painting, music, dance, writing, or any other form of creative expression—is a powerful process in which terrible experiences and dark emotions can be used to create something wonderful.

COMMIT TO GETTING BETTER

Tenacity and commitment are imperative to healing. To get better, to feel better, you have to keep on living, even while you hurt, and keep on moving in spite of obstacles. “The decision to heal was a big decision, one I had to make almost daily,” Akaya says. “It was a commitment. ‘I will figure this out. I will heal from this. I will not put up with half a life. I will not!’” According to Sady Doyle, being OK means merely that the event or events that hurt you, the terrible things that happened to you, happened a long time ago. With time, and making the choice to face what happened and move forward (over and over again if necessary), the sexual abuse that hurt you will have less and less pull over you. You’ll realize that you don’t think about it as often, that it just doesn’t affect your daily life the way it once did. As Doyle writes, “You can get past ‘OK.’ You can get way past ‘OK.’ You can actually get to ‘great.’ That’s where a lot of the sexual assault survivors I’ve met have ended up: GREAT. So I’m not telling you that you have to be happy now. I’m telling you that it’s possible, and common. And one day, you might end up there, and not even realize it until you take a second to look around.”
