When you are in situations that make you feel anxious, visualize that ladder and where your anxiety fits. If you register only mild anxiety, stay as you are. If you register moderate anxiety, check your body for muscle tension. Relax your muscles and breathe more slowly.

If you find yourself hyperventilating (breathing quickly and in shallow breaths), you can do two things. Try to slow your breathing, which will be the opposite of what your body wants to do. Hold you breath as long as you can, then resume breathing more slowly. Concentrate on exhaling as much as inhaling. If all else fails, breathe into a paper bag (never a plastic bag). Breathing in air you have exhaled will adjust the level of carbon dioxide in your body, thus calming you down.
