THE BANK OF Malibu was not hard for me to locate. I stopped at Betsy’s diner and used its phone directory to get the location and then I stayed for a java, but no cake this time.

“Did you find the place?”

Betsy was there with the coffeepot before I had a chance to sit down. She remembered my tip from earlier on.

“Yes, thanks. Now I’m off to the center of town.”

“You lead a busy life.”

“It comes in waves. Some weeks there’s nothing to do and other times, like this week, it’s full to the brim.”

She smiled and poured my java, but I was itching to be on my way.

“I’ve changed my mind. Can I have that to go, please?”

Her shoulders sagged as she imagined her gratuity evaporating before her eyes, but I left her a dollar to show there were no hard feelings.
