He watched as they rushed out of the house and followed them to town. He waited across

the street, hoping that when they came out of the doctor’s office that the young woman, his

quarry, would be going home with the other two and not on her way to the hospital. He knew if

she were to have the baby early, he would have to find a way to let Mrs. Rivers know that her

plans would have to be changed, and the last thing he wanted to do was have a one-sided

conversation with that particular woman doing all the screaming.

He followed them to the farmhouse, but kept driving until he reached the bridge. He

pulled under it, parking by the creek, just like he had every day for the past month, then would

sneak back around on foot. He waited close to the barn while they had what seemed, from his

point of view, a cozy little lunch; a view that he was more than ready to change and be done with

once and for all. But, this was one case where the money was worth doing it the way the old bat

requested. He took out his cell phone and dialed her beeper, heading back to his car. He didn’t

stay long enough to see if the tall, long-haired man had left like he had every night since he

started scoping the place, or if he stayed the night. He thought Mrs. Rivers would want to know

about the target being rushed to the doctor, but more so, he needed to know if their routine was

going to change.

He waited for an hour, sitting in his car before his cell phone rang to life. He lifted it up

to his ear and listened as the woman on the other end’s voice exploded with anger.

“You better have one hell of a good reason to call my beeper. I was right in the middle of

a meeting with the shareholders of my company. Do you have any idea what I had to go through

to find a place that was private enough to call you back?”

“It’s worth it, Mrs. Rivers.”

“It better be, Mr. Black.”

He told her what he had witnessed and she instructed him to hang up and wait for her to

call him back when she was away from the office. When he asked if she wanted him to observe

the target until then, she told him he was the professional and not to be wasting her time with

stupid questions, then hung up on him. He became so enraged that he got out of his car and

slammed the door, then placed a foot sized dent into the driver’s side door.

The more time he waited, the more he thought long and hard about getting in his car and

driving away from the job. More than one thing was starting to get to him, making him rethink,

and Devon Black knew he wouldn’t be standing under this blasted bridge if he wasn’t the best at

what he did. He also knew rethinking in his line of work didn’t do anything but put you behind

four walls with a one way door…or six feet under.
