Here we sit, in the HQ in Dalmarnock. Me and Eurydice, in her office. Kind of hoped I’d never be back here again, to be honest. Getting dragged into a city-wide investigation was not on my list of twenty things to do before leaving the police.

The list only had one thing on it, and it involved not doing much of anything. Nevertheless, I doubt Eurydice wants me here anymore than I want to be here, so no one’s happy. Circumstances have included me in this shitshow – indeed, Michael Clayton’s very existence has included me – and this will be played out until it’s over.

This time it has something of a him-or-me feel to it. Well, so did the last one, to be fair, and that didn’t pan out. However, as previously noted, I’m still kicking myself about that, so we can’t let the same thing happen again.

Clayton found me easily enough last night, and I have no doubt he’ll do it again.

I’ve told Eurydice everything there is to tell, including all the relevant information on Elise. She’s staring at me across the desk. There’s no judgement in her look.

‘I take it you don’t believe him,’ she says, just as silence has begun its invasive creep across the room.

‘Not sure. There was always something about him, though. He was big on the lies of omission. So perhaps he’s not actually carrying out these murders, but it doesn’t mean he’s not behind them, at least.’

‘How did he word it?’

‘I don’t remember.’

‘You think it’ll come back to you at some point?’

‘I wouldn’t count on it,’ I say. ‘But if I think of anything...’

‘We shan’t make the case dependent on it. Anyway, if what we have to do here is get this guy off the streets and back into prison, he’s removed his parole bracelet, so we have just cause.’

‘All you need to do is catch him again.’

She admires my deadpan delivery.

‘You think I should speak to this woman?’

When I say I told her all the relevant information, I neglected to mention Elise’s age. Not that being twenty-two doesn’t make her a woman, but I feel when Eurydice learns this, the word woman will not be getting used in the conversation.

I let out a bit of a sigh, but I don’t really care if the relationship between me and Elise is messed up by Eurydice asking her if she’s working for the bad guys. And then there’s the other thing. While some women would be offended by the suggestion, I suspect Elise will love it.

‘Yes,’ I say. ‘I’ll give you her details.’

‘Don’t let her know.’

‘I won’t.’

‘What does she do?’

‘She walks dogs for rich people. Makes two thousand a week.’

‘That’s what she told you?’

‘Yes.’

‘Did you believe her?’

‘I’ve seen her three times. Twice we had sex and once we split dinner. I don’t know why she’d lie about the money she makes, she can’t think I’d care.’

‘Maybe she considers you a catch, and wants to lure you in,’ says Eurydice, with none of the tone one might expect when stating such a preposterous hypothesis.
