“That’s incredible,” I hear a woman say.

Javier nods. “And speed is important. If someone is rescued from under the snow within fifteen minutes and there are no serious injuries, the chance of survival is about ninety percent.”

“So once the dog locates a human scent, she’ll start to dig,” Javier explains. “The handler will go to that spot in the snow and use an avalanche probe pole.”

Javier holds up one of the poles. He shows the crowd how a patroller pushes the pointy-ended pole into different areas in the snow, trying to locate the victim.

“Once the probe hits upon something and it’s determined where the victim is, the patroller uses a shovel to dig out that person as quickly as possible,” Javier explains.

Then he says something that catches my ear.

“Now here’s the demo you’ve been waiting for. Let’s watch our avalanche rescue dog Ava and her handler Nate in action.”

Javier turns to Nate and gives him a nod.

Nate leads me away from the crowd and says, “You got this, Ava. You know what to do. Just let those hunting instincts of your wolf ancestors kick in.”

Nate unlatches my leash.

“You ready?” he asks.

Then he gives the command.

“Search!”
