I was talking with my buddy Jason recently. He told me about a dark time in his life when he felt as though God was telling him destructive things about himself. But here’s the thing: Jason found all sorts of Bible verses he read in a way that seemed to affirm these destructive things. Not only that, but when he’d ask friends for their opinions about those thoughts, he’d misinterpret what they were saying, solidifying his agreement with those thoughts. It was bad all around.

One of the things that finally broke those thoughts apart happened when he was talking with a wise, older teacher-guy. Jason said to the teacher-guy, “Hey, teacher-guy, I hear you telling me a lot of good, hopeful stuff—but it seems to fly right in the face of these thoughts I’ve been having. What do you think?”

The wise teacher-guy stopped, got quiet for a long moment, and then said something similar to something Jesus said, “Are those thoughts growing any good fruit in you?”

Jason thought about this. Those thoughts had done nothing but drive him crazy, make him hate himself, distance himself from God and his friends, and bring him to the brink of suicide. “No,” he said to the wise teacher-guy.

The wise teacher-guy then said, “Then those thoughts aren’t from God.”

So as we talk about listening for God’s word for ourselves, let’s remember it has to line up with the Bible, needs to be vetted by pals, and must make your life more fruitful—growing good things.

End of caveat.

Now how do we know that hearing God’s word directly for ourselves is a valid form of communication?

Well, all throughout the Bible, God talks to people personally. Here are a few examples:

God told Adam it wasn’t good for him to be alone.

God told Abram he was going to have a son, even though he was old.

God told Moses to set the Israelites free from Egypt via a voice in a burning bush.

God told Joshua to be strong and courageous.

God told King David that someone from his family would be on the throne forever and ever.

God told Isaiah the nation of Israel would go through a period of suffering.

God talked to people while He was walking around the earth as Jesus.

God told Paul to go to certain places and not go other places.

God told Peter to be kind to people he didn’t want to be kind to.

God told John what the future would be like.
