The day of Professor Pricken’s Sentence Hearing had finally arrived.

Since pleading ‘No Contest’ to reckless endangerment charges two weeks earlier at his Arraignment Hearing, the topic of how much time the professor should serve had been a hot topic discussed and debated by the citizens of Titanville. That the weather continued to be unseasonably warm for September only added to the heated tensions in the air.

Some citizens believed the professor was guilty of much more than just reckless endangerment. They felt strongly charges such as kidnapping and rape should have been brought forth. But the majority felt the city was lucky just to be getting the fiend off the streets and behind bars.

The prosecution had no witnesses but strong circumstantial evidence. Unfortunately for the prosecution, the two superheroines had continued to be unable to offer any clues to the case as they simply could not even remember being at the warehouse.

The longest prison time the professor could be sentenced to was ten years, but most felt the judge would not be too harsh. Most expected the professor to be sentenced to serve about five years and then another year or two in monitored home confinement.

The two goon-guards who were arrested with the professor had also pleaded ‘No Contest’ and they had each received only three-year sentences earlier in the day at the courthouse. The judge had intimated the goon-guards were only pawns in a grander scheme and were not ‘the brains’ behind what had happened.

Rumor had it the goon-guards were prepared to turn state’s evidence and cooperate with the prosecution, but all that went by the wayside when the professor stunned the entire city when he himself had pleaded ‘No Contest’ two weeks previously.

The Sentence Hearings for the two goon-guards earlier in the morning had been just a warmup to the afternoon’s main event.

Crowds had started gathering in the morning even though the professor wasn’t due to be transferred from the city jail to the courthouse until midafternoon. Finally, at a few minutes before his scheduled three o’clock sentencing, the professor finally arrived at the courthouse.

He was taken out of the jail van and was escorted by armed guards into the courthouse via the service entrance. In fact, parked next to the black jail van in the service parking lot was the white mini-bus which would take the professor directly to the state prison after his Sentence Hearing.

The professor had declined the opportunity to wear civilian clothes and he was still dressed in his orange jail suit. His legs were shackled with a short chain between his feet and his wrists were handcuffed in front of him.

Seeing the prisoner arrive and escorted into the courthouse had awakened the crowd and there was now quite a murmur in the air.

The murmur spread to the full courtroom and gallery-balcony when the professor was escorted into the courtroom. The gallery-balcony was especially packed with inquisitive spectators, Alisa Trond being one of them.

Then everything hushed as the bailiff spoke.
