Chapter Fifty-Nine

Parker

My mate looks worn out. She steps outside with a wan smile, and I hesitate to lock the apartment back up. I don’t want her going back to her dorm room. I want her right here where we can look after her properly.

“You okay? Sean said you tripped in the shop.”

“I’m okay,” she tells me.

She’s lying, but I won’t call her on it. She’s been through enough.

“Stay for dinner,” I say, refusing to make it a question.

She blinks at me, as if she’s not sure she heard me right.

“Um, is that okay with Sean?” she asks.

I wouldn’t give a shit if it wasn’t, but I set her mind at rest. “He wanted me to ask.”

“I guess…” she starts.

“What’s your favorite food?” I ask, not letting her finish.

“Um, I don’t know.”

“Everyone has a favorite food,” I tell her. “There must be something that you like more than other stuff. I like tacos, even if they’re messy. They’re always good.”

She really doesn’t know. I can see it in her expression. She’s used to not having opinions.

Being bottom of the pile tends to do that. She puts up with things, doesn’t really think about whether she likes them or not. It’s just the way things are.

“Um, I like grilled cheese,” she eventually says, shrugging. “My mom made the best grilled cheese.”

It’s a start. I nod. “I can manage a grilled cheese.”

“Anything’s good with me,” she says.

It’s not. Not anymore. She’s not going to settle when I’m around.

I take her hand, and her cheeks flush.

“We should grab some things from the store,” I tell her. “If you want to swing by your room for anything, we can do that too.”
