“Hold-fucking-still!” Rick said. He grabbed Healy by the shoulders and slapped him across the chin. The edge of his hand caught the arachnid, knocking it several feet away. Atkins sprinted to the thing and stomped his heel on it.

“Fuck!”

Healy continued whacking his vest, slowly catching his breath.

“It’s here! It threw it!” The words shot rapidly from his mouth. He looked into the jungle where he saw the birds fly out. “From there! It’s in there somewhere.”

“Could be anywhere at this poi—” Atkins looked around, “Ishmael?” The other four group members looked around, realizing the mercenary was not among them.

“Where the hell is he?” Zimmerman said.

“Ishmael?!” Atkins called out. He looked behind the fallen tree with no results, then turned back and saw Rick pointing at some skid marks on the ground. They went back behind a thick set of shrubs, definitely the result of someone being dragged back against his will.

The men formed positions near the shrubs, as though they were about to breach a door. All at once, they shot into the trail. Fifteen feet in was Ishmael’s body, his throat and eyes gone, his ribs opened up, his submachine gun broken. Bloody footprints led straight ahead behind a line of trees.

Atkins fired several bursts into the jungle. “Son of a bitch coward! Show yourself!”

Rick and Zimmerman hurried next to him, ready to join the fray. The Sergeant stopped, his mind flashing back to the spider, the dead sea lion, the panther. He glanced at the bloody footsteps, laid out in plain view.

“Wait…” he turned around. Healy was right behind him, with Shaw just a few steps back. Suddenly, the jungle came alive, and a green, crustacean shape sprang out from the vegetation. Shaw screamed at the tooth-lined mouth and managed to fire a burst of rounds as the clawed hands grabbed him by the vest. Like a transient spirit, it dragged his flailing body deep into the jungle.

“There!” Rick yelled. He sprinted into the jungle after them. Already, the beast was out of sight. He heard Shaw scream from far within. Following the noise, he switched the M4 to full auto, and ran as fast as he could.
