Chapter 10 - Message

The second Saturday of the month was also a special time for William Willis. It was his day to venture to his barber shop. Over the years, the shop had added manicure services, performed by masculine men, as well as pedicure services provided by the same. Cuttin’ Up, the name of his barbershop, had become a male grooming salon sitting in the heart of Harlem. Today, he walked through the front door full of pride accompanied by his sons-in-law.

“Willie Willis, as I live and breathe,” Nate Rubbate called out. “You getting your usual today?”

“Yessir. Yessir,” Willie called back, taking a number for himself and passing one each to Jeremy and Jerome. “I got my sons-in-law with me today, and I know you guys are gonna take good care of them.”

Jeremy was quiet as he’d walked the three blocks to Willie’s barber. He was a tad bit shaggy around the edges, and he normally clipped his own toenails, but the bottoms of his feet looked like he’d been walking with Jesus. The last thing he wanted to do tonight was to try and get in some cuddles and scratch up his wife’s legs. Sharp eyes scanned the room looking for the first frog who planned to jump. He spotted him inside chair, holding an old Ebony magazine. This was the man who would be the first to make a racial comment, and true to form Pop Welling spoke first.

“Uhmm, Willie, seems like one of your sons by marriage is missing some melanin,” Pop Welling shouted out, garnering a few snickers from the crowd.

Jeremy snapped back, “Hey, your sister was okay with it when we used to go out last year.”

The whole room ooohed and ahhed. Willie cut his head to look at Jeremy, surprised at his quick response.

Pop didn’t find it funny, coming back quickly, “Hey, you don’t even know my sister.”

“Is that the lie she’s still telling people about how she likes to get down?” Jeremy said, bringing his fingers to his lips and making a zipping motion. “It’s cool. I’m married now, but she’ll always be special in my heart.”

The room erupted into laughter and Jerome slapped him on the back, going over to take a seat. Another man, older than Methuselah’s little baby cousin on his daddy’s side of the family, said loudly. “Willie, I guess this cuts down on us snapping on the ugly son-in-law. You’re going to have some weird looking grandkids.”

“You all can kiss my ass, talking about my grandkids! My little angels are going to be smart and the next generation of leaders,” Willie boasted, pointing at a seat for Jeremy to take.

Pop Welling wasn’t done. He felt some kind of way with the changes in Harlem, and now Willie walking in parading his daughter’s ne’re-do-wells in front of all the menfolk in the shop. Jeremy’s eye was still on Pop as the man leaned back in the seat, preparing himself to pick a fight he was going to lose.

“Ain’t yo
