The two of them got back to their hotel and immediately went into research mode, where each of them independently went to a separate area of the room to dig into the last two men. Sloane was on the bed with her laptop, accessing a secure server at the Department of Justice. While Mace used the phone Sloane had given him—assuring him that his searches would be secure on this device. By now he guessed she was right. Everything he looked into on his phone was immediately erased from the device after his search.

Mace sat at a small desk with a view out the window at the hazy afternoon. Although the rain had subsided by now, the swirling clouds overhead were threatening more carnage.

“Check this out,” Sloane said.

He swiveled his chair around toward her.

“You have to actually get up to see my computer,” she said.

He went across the room and took a seat at the head of the bed next to Sloane. “What do you have?”

“As you know, I have background on each of these men,” she said. “But I just found a tie with this guy, Yusuf Moussa.”

“The Lebanese tug driver.”

“Right.” She turned the screen toward Mace. “Turns out the man’s family has ties with a terrorist group in Lebanon?”

“Hezbollah?” Mace asked.

“No,” Sloane said. “Another group of assholes. They go by a different name every year it seems.”

“You can’t swing a dead cat in Lebanon without hitting a terrorist,” Mace said. “Why wasn’t this caught when Yusuf Moussa emigrated to America?”

Sloane shook her head. “It turns out the man didn’t go through the normal process. He crossed the border through Mexico.”

That seemed to be a common theme, Mace thought.

“Even more ammunition to terminate his stay in our great country,” Mace surmised.

She checked her watch and said, “By now they have to have heard about their friends, Kafeel and Tang.”

“The Sudanese for sure,” Mace said. “His death has been all over the local news. But Tang’s death could go unnoticed by the local authorities.”

“Right,” she agreed. “Just a home accident. But if the cell hears about it, they could panic.”

“And what?” Mace asked. “We already took their explosives.”

“Unless they have a contingency for that,” she reasoned.

“A secondary source?”

“Or method,” she said. “Maybe they got ahold of a Stinger.”

He shook his head. “If they had a shoulder missile, they’d use it. No, they wanted to blow up a plane mid-flight.”

“Well, with Tang gone, they’ll need to find another source.”

He thought about that and then said, “Only the Lebanese and Afghani men remain.”

“Can they pull this off with just those two?” she wondered aloud.

“How many men does it take to plant a bomb in a food cart on an airliner?” he asked rhetorically. “The Afghani works for the food service company, and the Lebanese guy is a tug driver. Those two could pull it off.”

“If they had the explosives,” she said.

“What if the Afghani plants a gun in the food cart,” Mace asked. “Then the Lebanese guy has a ticket on that flight.
