Chapter Twelve

Dawn brought no warmth with it, only a torrential downpour. The animals were restless and hungry, but I didn’t dare leave the cabin to get their food. Edric could probably break into the house as easily as mow me down in the yard, but I was too afraid to leave. I tried to tell myself that a few hours wouldn’t hurt them, but a few hours turned into a few more hours, and then it was night. None of us slept, and in the morning, I reluctantly let them back outside.

My fears morphed from Edric circling back or getting to Mother first to images of my vampires lying dead on the forest floor, scavenged by the beasts of the forest. It made my heart hurt just to think of it.

By mid-morning, I was determined to go find them, but just as I finished getting ready, Zan came stumbling out of the forest. He carried Sanyi’s body.

I knew instantly he was dead.

A scream tore from my throat, my knees giving out. I collapsed, feeling my chest tearing itself apart. I never had the chance. I hadn’t been able to tell him. Tears poured down my face as I collapsed onto the ground, my fingers tearing through the turf. Zan’s footsteps approached and he dropped heavily beside me.

“Edric should be dead. We should have killed him, but he kept coming back,” Zan’s voice was flat. “They say he has a deal with Poseidon… maybe that’s what it is.”

Trembling, I lifted my head. Zan cradled Sanyi’s body in his arms, a defeated, dead look on his face. I reached with a trembling hand to touch Sanyi’s face. It was so cold, so pale.

But his eyelid flickered at my touch. I gasped, pressing closer. “He’s alive!”

Zan shook his head. “Barely. His heart has stopped. It’s the vampire’s curse that it’ll take time for him to die. But after the heart has stopped at this stage of our transformation… there is no coming back, Bianca. No amount of blood will save him now. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. But I wanted to bring him back here, so you could say goodbye.”

“What about CPR?” I cried desperately. “Or one of those crash card things? There has to be a way to restart his heart!”

Zan brushed his fingers down Sanyi’s shirt, revealing a jagged cut in the fabric, matched by a jagged stab wound in Sanyi’s chest. It was an inch wide, the skin pulling apart as though someone had taken a chunk out of him. It made me sick to my stomach. My hands trembled, but as I saw that wound, I knew what I had to do.

“How much time does he have?” The trembling fear had vanished from my voice.

Zan looked up, surprised at the change in me. “What?”

“How much time? Edric is going to tell Mother about me anyway. So what’s the use of keeping my magic hidden? I can brew a healing potion, but I need to know how much time we have.
